Area 54, International Speech & Evaluation Contest Results

On the evening of Wednesday March 21, 2012, Barb Katz and Ken Knucky performed in the Inspirational and Evaluation contest for District 2, Area 54. The event was held at the Redmond library. Barb performed her wonderfully honed speech of', " A Bad Time" or was it "Spilled Milk", which was successful in winning first place and advancement to the District level competition.

                          Ken presented a masterful evaluation of the target speech, however, was disqualified for exceeding the time limit. We thank both of our champions for the time and energy spent reaching this competition.

Barb and Ken's speeches were cheered on by some of there fellow Toastmasters from Public Speaking Northwest- Club #9406 and the family of Barb Katz.

Public Speaking Northwest Wows Its Members with 2 Great Speeches

Barb, Ken, Jan, Emery, Prema, Cary, Jean, and honored guest, Lynne, cheered our 2 speakers today.

President Barb began the meeting and Emery, as the toastmaster of the day, prepared the agenda and ran the meeting with ease and confidence. Emery provided us with facts about, his theme, “The Ides of March.”

Ken’s Presentation:

Ken entitled his talk, “Mom.” He spoke from the Storytelling Manual and chose the folk tale, “Goldilocks.” He related how his mother told dramatic bedtime stories and he enchanted us with one of his favorites. Like the Mark Twain’s quote above, Ken used effective pauses to emphasize his points.

Ken kept us in awe as he told a very different version of Goldilocks. He used his large 6’3” frame to move across the front of the room with big gestures as he acted out each character.

If you weren’t there, you missed out on the amazing improvement in Ken’s speaking abilities. (Such an improvement takes place in all our members after completing just one manual of ten talks.) Ken has consistently taken every opportunity to speak and we are witnessing his growth.

Barb’s Presentation:

Because Barb will be competing in the Area Contest on the 21^st, she practiced her contest talk one more time. It inspired us with its theme of failure, guilt, and forgiveness. Her gestures showed us exactly what she meant. Her voice rose and fell with the drama of her true story.

We can’t give too much detail because this is a contest speech and there has to be some surprises. We can say we are proud of Barb’s courage, her drive to perfect her talk, and the inspiration she shares within the talk itself. Prema ~ Today’s Table Topics Master

Prema prepared our table topics and got all of us thinking with her on the spot questions. (One thing about Prema is her grace and gentle manner. She effectively uses her leadership skills within the community. She attributes this to the confidence she’s gained in Toastmasters.) 

Her question to Cary was, “Describe your perfect day.” Of course fishing was one of his responses as he took us through his fun day.

The trophies and blue ribbons went to:

Best speaker ~ Barb

Best evaluator ~ Jean

Best table topics speaker ~ Cary.

The meeting ended on time. Many members stayed around to chat. Our guest, Lynne, kept remarking on how warm and welcoming the members treated her.

Public Speaking Northwest Holds March Officers' Meeting

Officers present included: Emery Jordan, Ken Knuckey, Pierce Loftin, Jan Skoog, Barbara Katz, Jean Tracy, and Prema D'sa.

Our President Barbara Katz led the meeting because she knows what she’s talking about. With her leadership we sailed through our agenda.

 Business Accomplished!

1. Our club dues every 6 month will be $14. It will be added to our International Toastmaster dues of $36 to make it an even $50 twice a year. This is such an inexpensive education for speaking and leading which gives each member plenty of practice. The dues are for:

·       Blue ribbon awards

·       Ballots

·       Trophies

·       Manuals

·       Special manual achievement awards

2. The officers agreed that Table Topics enhances our meetings by giving more members opportunities to speak, laugh and have fun. We will do our best to include them at each meeting.

3. To help Ken schedule members more easily, our president will pass the roster at each meeting for members to fill in their roles throughout the month.

4. To save time our timer will give very brief timing explanations for speeches, table topics, and evaluations. We will also ask our toastmaster of the day to keep comments brief.

5. Emery shared his public relations activities which included reaching online venders, cities like Bothell, Bellevue, Woodinville, and Redmond, local newspaper calendars which list meeting times and places. He will post flyers to local colleges, libraries, and churches. Honestly, we’ve never had such an active PR officer. Emery's terrific!

6. Since we don’t meet on April 1^st, we’ll have our April Fools Day Celebration on Tuesday, April 3^rd. This will be an Open House for members of the community. Tasty snacks will be included. Jan S. will be our toastmaster for this celebration.

Public Speaking Northwest Features New Member's First Talk

 

Public Speaking Northwest Encourages New Member!

Toastmaster Prema, President Barb, Jan S., Pierce, Ken, Ana, Emery, Jan Z., and Jean applauded our new member Cary.

Cary's Presentation

Cary gave his first toastmaster talk (4-6 minutes) called the ice breaker. Ice breakers are always about the new member's life because that's what all of us know best ~ ourselves.

Cary learned early on the power of smiling and being positive. He was 7 when he received his first kiss not by one girl but by two. As his life moved forward he gained a passion for girls, baseball, football, fishing, and basketball (Cary's very tall).

After challenging struggles throughout his teens, Cary's happy to be alive, meet new people, and have fun. Cary ended by sharing one of his beliefs, "When life throws you a curve ball, sometimes you can't anticipate a break," but it does come if you truly want it.

Barbara evaluated Cary's speech and gave him lots of kudos for his openness and the skills he already possesses.

Pierce's Presentation as Second Speaker

Pierce amazed us with his talk about the business he and his partner are launching entitled, Silver Loftin Media Works

Pierce shared the mission of his company and its core values which are:

• Control (giving control to the customer)
• Artistic (offering awesome designs and solutions for the customer)
• Naked (being upfront and transparent with the customer)

His company is offering comprehensive services for consumers by publishing, setting up marketing, filming, providing CD's, book covers, book trailers, printing to order on Amazon and so many others. Pierce's company cators to authors, creative artists, musicians, and anyone who creates products.

He and his partner are looking for interns to teach various online skills.

Pierce ended by saying, "People have voices and we want to get their voices out there."

Ken evaluated Pierce with enthusiam because Pierce used technical equipment to show us exactly what he and his partner are doing and because Pierce has a wealth of talent we can all tap into. 

Jean, as Table Topics Master, asked everyone to look at the person next to them for 10 seconds, then close their eyes for 10 seconds. They were to remember the persons features and give them a new name.

Ana won the Table Topics ribbon because she described Ken's blue eyes, laugh lines, and named him "Santa Claus." Ken responded with a "Ho-ho-ho!"

Cary won the blue ribbon for best speaker.

Ken won the blue ribbon for best evaluator.

When Public Speaking Northwest Talks, Members Listen!!

Our president, Barbara Katz, received her engraved trophy for winning our club's Inspirational Speech Contest! She will now compete in our Area's Contest on March 21st at the Redmond Library.

Join us to receive help and praise for your presentations!

Our theme for today was "The Oscars." Emery Jordan, our toastmaster, picked the topic. Throughout the meeting he shared information about the winners and many of his fun opinions.

Barbara Katz, our first speaker, delivered a hilarious talk on, "The Amazing Microsoft Magical Mystery Meeting." She gave her account of searching for the correct building, Studio D. She had 20 minutes to find the building once she entered the campus. "The Microsoft campus is the size of the University of Washington and is very complicated," she said. 

Barb's mission was to practice giving her championship speech to a new audience in preparation for the Area Contest. Barb drove us through a maze of  twists, turns, and dead ends before she arrived at her destination 2 minutes late.

Barb's account of what happened next  as she stepped onto the stage, surprised us all. You should have heard what she said!

Ken Knuckey evaluated Barb's speech with confidence, praise, and elegance.

Jan Skoog, our second speaker, gave her best speech ever! Jan, an international traveler, presented, "A Brief Overview of Russian Miniature Boxes."

Jan brought 2 large trays of multi-sized and multi-shaped lacquered boxes. Her talk was art history appreciation in motion. We learned that artists used one bristle hair from a sable brush to paint these exquisite masterpieces. Such boxes were first created in China and then promoted by Peter the Great. Jan's  in depth information was amazing for a 7 minute speech.

Besides Jan's fabulous information and beautiful props, Jan exhibited so many toastmaster skills like eye contact with the audience, vocal variety, expansive gestures, and excellent organization of her material. 

Jean Tracy evaluated Jan's speech with the acronym, PEEPS.

Public Speaking Northwest Honors Champions

Public Speaking Is Fun with Friends like Prema, Ken, Emery, Jan,. and Jean at Your Side.

Today our champion evaluator, Ken Knuckey, received his engraved trophy for winning our club’s evaluation contest.

Public Speaking Quote for today:

These words glowed throughout the speech of Toastmaster’s International Champion, Ian Humphrey. His hot title, “It’s not about the Knockdown,” stirred our interest. 

Ian Humphrey used Muhammad Ali’s knockdown as a metaphor for his own life. The GLOW shone throughout with his:

Gestures – Ian pointed to the floor for Ali’s countdown. He smiled as he mimicked Ali’s words about being pretty. He smacked his head for the headache Ali’s opponent felt when he fell to the canvas after Ali gave his famous punch. Ian's grand use of gestures throughout his talk showed us exactly what he meant.

Language – Ian used simple straightforward language that was clear, clean, and clever. Every sentence said exactly what he meant without an ah, um, or unnecessary word.

Organization – Ian opened dramatically with Muhammad’s knockdown, rising from the canvas, and winning. Then Ian shared how he almost died as boy, was taken from his mother, got into drugs, prison, and then cleaned up his life. Like Muhammad Ali, he rose from the canvas. Now Ian Humphrey is a world champion in public speaking!

Wow! – Ian Humphrey wowed us throughout his speech. He wowed us in his call to action at the end, telling us to repeat to ourselves “I believe in you.” Why? Because only Muhammad Ali knew he wasn’t out for the count. Only Muhammad Ali knew he would rise from the canvas. Ian Humphrey told us to, “Fight and you too can win because life is what you do after the knockdown. This is what defines you.”

Each member evaluated Ian’s speech sharing their positive ideas, struggling to offer a suggestions, and telling what they learned about this amazing man.

Jean won best evaluator. 

Emery, as table topic master, told the members to pick a number for their question. Everyone qualified for the ribbon.

Prema won as best table topic speaker.

Next week Emery with be our Toastmaster.
