Public Speaking Northwest Minutes 7-28-20

Our toastmaster club treats members like a warm and caring family.

Announcements: 1. Officers and members come to a training Mele on August 8. So Educational! 2. Next Tuesday is our officer meeting at 11:00 am.

Our Meeting Toastmaster: Nancy’s theme was summer sunshine.

Our President: Our president pro-tem was Nancy. She was our Zoom host too. So many hats!

Our Gate Team was:

Grammarian Lynn’s chose ‘Adapt’ as our word of the day. Many members correctly used it.
Ah Counter Robert meticulously counted our Ah’s to help us eliminate them when we talk.
TimerJim said almost everyone was within their time limit. One member was 2 seconds over.
General Evaluator – Jinxin gave an elegant and positive evaluation of the todays’ meeting.

Our Speaker  Kate’s title. “The More You Know,” defined ‘Mentoring.’ Kate shared how she learned from a seasoned mentor that she didn’t have to know everything. She just had to ask someone who could answer her questions. So encouraging to those of us who think we need to be experts and dislike asking for help. Our strong mentor program helps new members adapt to our club easily.

Our Evaluator - Jean found 10 excellent toastmaster skills Kate used in her talk. One was her ability to be conversational. Jean encouraged Kate to keep sharing more dialogue and inner thoughts. She gave a simple challenge -create more pauses within her talk so we have time to enjoy her message.

Our Table Topics MasterHana used today’s theme and asked Robert, Lynn, Lucelly, and Jinxin sun shiny questions. They all smoothly spoke on the topics without any preparation.

Our Humorist - Robert told a joke about a little boy and his sprained finger.

Our Guests in Attendance – Caryn, our area director, inducted our new members. Jean inducted Lynn into the club with our New Member Pledge. We all promised to help her grow. Nancy is her very own mentor.

Public Speaking Minutes 7-21-20

Our Speakers – A panel discussion led by Jean Tracy. Panelists were Jean, Jim Tracy, Kate Morris

Topic: In Toastmasters, “Participation Is the Key to Growth.” Jean showed how our officers demonstrated personal and club growth. Jim shared how effective evaluations include “Ingestion, Digestion, and Suggestion.”  Kate revealed how each role in a toastmaster meeting enhances the participant with valuable skills.

 Our Evaluators - Giri Mudili praised the panel for its novel format, clarity, and recovery from unintended interruptions.

Our Table Topics Master – Nancy Carpenter used jokes to stimulate fun responses.

Our Table Topic Speakers – Mara Williams likes moderate temperatures, Hana Vu, from Viet Nam, didn’t expect hot weather in the Pacific Northwest, Giri likes air conditioning.

General Evaluator – Warren Lewis praised the meeting as a whole and enjoyed the different format.

Public Speaking Northwest Minutes for 7-14-2020

Announcements: Officer Training is happening!

Our Meeting Toastmaster: Kate Morris showed true leadership making the meeting flow flawlessly. Her theme was “Turning of the Tides.”

Our President: Barb Katz welcomed Zoom guest, Julie McLean, from Jacksonville, Florida. With her application in hand, Lynn Connell is becoming our newest member. Welcome, Lynn!

Our Gate Team was:

Our Speaker: Giri fascinated us with his speech, “Understanding Emotional Intelligence – Focus on the Positive.” He showed us how to “Make the Pink Elephant in the Room Disappear.” He opened with a story to catch our attention, talked about Carl Jung’s “shadow” of negativity that we can easily  overcome, and even used the character, George, from Seinfeld to demonstrate what he meant. Finally, Giri tuned us into being aware of our ‘Light Bulb Moments.” Giri gave a truly motivational speech.

 Giri’s Evaluator - Jim praised Giri’s energy, enthusiasm, and content. He also added a few tweaks for Giri to consider.

Our Table Topics Master – Jean led Table Topics using the theme ‘Turning of the Tides,’ which means ‘Change.’

Our Table Topic Speakers -’ Jinxin turned the tide of a personal problem when she spoke to a helpful person. Lynn turned the tide of upset with her children with her self-talk and patience. Robert, as a teenager, turned the tide of with his parents by getting a library job and buying his own phone. Julie turned the tide by joining Toastmasters and earning 3 DTMs in 3 years.
