June 21, 2022

Public Speaking Northwest Toastmasters

 

Announcements:  

1.    We have a new member, Nitin

 

2.    The sleight of new officers was voted in:

President, Mara Williams

3.    Dan was inducted into the club and his mentor is Maria

 

4.    Nancy suggested going to District 65 for all Pathways forms and other Pathways information.

Our Sergeant at Arms, Lynne D, opened the meeting at 12:00 p.m.

 

Opening Comments were presented by our President pro temp, Nancy

 

The word of the day was “brilliant” meaning very smart, bright, successful

 

Our Toastmaster was Mara, who presented information on the Summer Solstice.

 

Our Gate Team was:

Timer – Nguyet

General Evaluator Jean

 

Speaker #1 was Kelly, with her speech, “The Faberge Protegee”, 5-7 min. She shared a story about one of her personal experiences as a protegee. The story illustrated the influence, impact, and importance of her mentor.  She concluded with a strong suggestion to work with our mentors.

 

 

Table Topics

Amy asked us to play the game, “Origin Story,” describing the origins of particular objects.

 

Nancy: Platypus; Oak Island Canada is shaped like the Platypus. Maybe the platypus came from Atlantis or another mythical place.

 

Lynne: Origin of treadmills was a young man named Tread Mills, who enjoyed swimming and treading water.  Mr. Mills eventually developed the device named after him.

 

Nitin: Origin story of bubble wrap, invented in 1957.  Invented by an American in the 1950’s.

 

Kristin: Origin story of underwater hockey. Kristin imagined people trying to play underwater polo which didn’t work, and so they changed it to underwater hockey using a volleyball instead of a puck.

 

Robert: Robert explained the origins of two types of surfing.  1) description of carpenters smoothing out wood.  2)He also described a board used to travel on top of water.

 

Maria: Maria told us the origin story of coffee, grown in tropical areas, where creatures ate the coffee berries and smelled wonderful. People liked the smell and decided to put coffee beans in water.

 

Meera:  Origin story of leopard spots. Various creatures in a rainy environment had many different colors of spots, caused by the rain.

 

Evaluator #1, Dan, said that Kelly gave a great speech with a strong introduction and a conclusion that tied it all together. He complimented hand movements (some of them wasted), excitement, energy and her inviting, warm smile. He complimented her great job at pacing and suggested more pauses.

 

General Evaluator, Jean, evaluated the evaluator, Dan.  She said he is an excellent listener who gave detailed positive feedback and suggestions.  Jean also evaluated the GATE team and Table Topics, recognizing positive points and make suggestions.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 1:00.

Officer Meeting Minutes

PUBLIC SPEAKING NORTHWEST

June 14, 2022

 

Meeting started approximately 1:10 p.m.

 

Officers in Attendance: Barb, Nancy, Lynne D., Mara

 

Minutes from the May meeting were approved.

 

OFFICER REPORTS

 

Report from VPE Nancy:

·       We have 21 members now.

·       We are President’s Distinguished

·       We have met 9 goals, with 2 extra Level 1 awards, 2 extra Level 4, 5, or DTM awards, and 2 extra new members.

 

Report from VPPR and VPM Mara:

·       PR activities continue on, and Mara will train next VPPR (Kelly) this week or next.

·       Membership is increasing:  Jeevana will sign up for membership after family emergency has been resolved. Atul will probably join, just taking his time.  Tobias Burns and Julie Hutton have rejoined.

 

Report from SSA Lynne:

·       Our new Zoom link is in place.

·       Lynne will be training Barb on Thursday to be a Zoom host, includes a different password for PSN.  Barb can have a co-host to assist her.

·       Barb now has all the boxes that belong to PSN.

·       Country Inn & Suites has raised the rates to $200 for a room.

 

Report from Secretary Barb:

·       Apologies for not keeping up

·       Nancy suggested not to change the Zoom password.

·       Mara suggested that if Zoom requires a verification code, know that it is emailed to VPE.

 

Report from Treasurer Jinxin.

·       Nancy complimented Jinxin’s report. 

·       No charges yet from Country Inn and Suites.

·       Meera has $20 credit (overpaid when joined).

·       Tobias Burns has $10 credit (overpaid when joined).

·       Tried to register Julie, but TI website was down.

·       Total $100 gain to the club in the last month.

May 24, 2022

Public Speaking Northwest Toastmasters

 

Announcements:  

1.    We have a new member: Nitin.

2.    Mara completed Level 2 of Presentation Mastery

3.    Next week we will have the induction ceremony of Dan.

The word of the day was “Crucial,” meaning critical or very important

 

Our Toastmaster was Amy, who gave us lots of information about the rain forest in Washington State and the Amazon.

General Evaluator Warren

 

Speaker #1 was Kelly, with her speech, “BRACE for Impact”, 5-7 min. She talked about people having four different personality types:  Direct, Supportive, Initiating, Analytical.  Shared an Air Force phrase, “Be Prepared. Be ready to be ready.”  As a speaker, watch the faces. Your speech will have a positive or negative impact. Prepare your speech for a positive impact.

 

Speaker #2 was Nancy, with her speech, “The UFO”, 4-6 minutes, her Ice Breaker for the Engaging Humor path.  She opened her speech with the sentence, “My Mom saw a UFO.” Later she clarified that the UFO was on the ground, so it was really a UPO, an Unidentified Parked Object.  Later Nancy’s brother confessed that he had rigged something up to look like a UFO as a prank, but Nancy’s Mom always believed that it was a real UFO..

 

Table Topics

Dan asked questions about random aspects about rain forests.

 

Jim was asked a question about something that didn’t last long enough.  He talked about his childhood disappointment (PTSD) with cotton candy.

 

Barb: Asked about a place of refuge, Barb talked about sitting in Pop’s recliner chair with cat on her lap.

 

Nitin: In response to a question about places to visit, Nitin talked about Kasmir, where he enjoyed mountains, snow, different people, different languages, and different food.

 

Robert: The canopy of the rain forest is high. What challenges and/or benefits would you endure or enjoy if you were 6’8” tall? Robert said that he would like high ceilings and he would need to have longer clothes.

 

Evaluator #1, Jean,  Complimented Kelly for looking at us in the camera and smiling. Kelly kept the audience involved by asking a question at the beginning and asking people to nod their heads.  Jean suggested that Kelly would pick a particular person to answer her question.

 

Evaluator #2, Mara, said that Nancy is an excellent story teller, with lots of descriptions, facial expressions, and hand gestures. Mara suggested that Nancy place the camera so that she is more prominent in the frame and keep her eyes on the camera.

 

General Evaluator, Warren, complimented Amy, saying that she was a “textbook” example of a Toastmaster for the meeting, and pointed out that this was Amy’s first time as a meeting TM.  The evaluators combined positive feedback and suggestions. The Gate team did a great job of giving their feedback.  Conclusion: A great meeting!

 

The meeting was adjourned at 1:05.
