The word of the day was “Crucial,” meaning critical or very important

Our Toastmaster was Amy, who gave us lots of information about the rain forest in Washington State and the Amazon.

Our Gate Team was:

Grammarian – Meera

Ah Counter – Mara.

Timer – Lynne

General Evaluator Warren

Speaker #1 was Kelly, with her speech, “BRACE for Impact”, 5-7 min. She talked about people having four different personality types:  Direct, Supportive, Initiating, Analytical.  Shared an Air Force phrase, “Be Prepared. Be ready to be ready.”  As a speaker, watch the faces. Your speech will have a positive or negative impact. Prepare your speech for a positive impact.

Speaker #2 was Nancy, with her speech, “The UFO”, 4-6 minutes, her Ice Breaker for the Engaging Humor path.  She opened her speech with the sentence, “My Mom saw a UFO.” Later she clarified that the UFO was on the ground, so it was really a UPO, an Unidentified Parked Object.  Later Nancy’s brother confessed that he had rigged something up to look like a UFO as a prank, but Nancy’s Mom always believed that it was a real UFO..

Table Topics

Dan asked questions about random aspects about rain forests.

Jim was asked a question about something that didn’t last long enough.  He talked about his childhood disappointment (PTSD) with cotton candy.

Barb: Asked about a place of refuge, Barb talked about sitting in Pop’s recliner chair with cat on her lap.

Nitin: In response to a question about places to visit, Nitin talked about Kasmir, where he enjoyed mountains, snow, different people, different languages, and different food.

Robert: The canopy of the rain forest is high. What challenges and/or benefits would you endure or enjoy if you were 6’8” tall? Robert said that he would like high ceilings and he would need to have longer clothes.

Evaluator #1, Jean,  Complimented Kelly for looking at us in the camera and smiling. Kelly kept the audience involved by asking a question at the beginning and asking people to nod their heads.  Jean suggested that Kelly would pick a particular person to answer her question.

Evaluator #2, Mara, said that Nancy is an excellent story teller, with lots of descriptions, facial expressions, and hand gestures. Mara suggested that Nancy place the camera so that she is more prominent in the frame and keep her eyes on the camera.

General Evaluator, Warren, complimented Amy, saying that she was a “textbook” example of a Toastmaster for the meeting, and pointed out that this was Amy’s first time as a meeting TM.  The evaluators combined positive feedback and suggestions. The Gate team did a great job of giving their feedback.  Conclusion: A great meeting!

The meeting was adjourned at 1:05.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Katz, Secretary
