Want a fun, friendly, and inexpensive public speaking education? – Join Toastmasters!

Announcements: Glenn has officially joined our club. Welcome, Glenn!

Our Meeting Toastmaster: Lynne who had each member wear a fun hat for “Wear a Hat Day.”

Our President: Barb welcomed our guest Ray and asked him to share a little about himself. What an interesting person!

Our Gate Team:

Grammarian and Word of the Day  Jim chose “Shindig” to fit Lynne’s theme.

Ah Counter – Jim caught a few “Ahs” and “Ums” from several of us. Our goal is to avoid using them.

Timer –  Glenn, as our timer for the first time, kept our speeches, table topics and evaluations within their limits using his green, yellow and red cards. He did a super job.

General Evaluator – Barb’s role was to evaluate the meeting from top to bottom. Her evaluation is below.

Our 1st Speaker Kate entitled her talk, “How to Create a More Welcoming TM Club.”

She suggested 4 steps to having new members introduce themselves and she used them in her Table Topics below. Such a great technique!

Our 2nd Speaker Mara entitled her speech, “Mara, You’ve Got Some ‘Splaining To Do” We’ve missed Mara for over 6 months. During that time, she started a coaching business, moved to a new home, took on a full-time job, sold her previous home, and is starting her coaching business again. She will end her full-time job in a few weeks and be able to attend our meetings regularly again. We missed you, Mara, and feel so pleased to have you back.

Our 1st Evaluator – Jean praised Kate for speaking clearly, audibly, and with well-paced pauses. She complimented her for sharing a welcoming technique for introducing new members.

Our 2nd EvaluatorGiri enthusiastically praised Mara for speaking with such serene inner comfort. He also liked how she looked right into the Zoom camera which is hard to do.

Our Table Topics Master – Kate’s role was to choose members to speak for 2 minutes practicing her introduction technique.

Robert, Jinxin and Jim each introduced themselves using Kate’s 4 stems from her talk:

1.    My name is…

2.    It is pronounced…

3.    I prefer to be called…

4.    I prefer you not call me…

We learned new information from each table topic speaker about themselves. Thanks for this great technique, Kate.

General Evaluator – Barb evaluated the meeting from beginning to end with special kudos to Lynne for her fun “Wear a Hat Day” theme, and to Giri for his comfortable style in evaluating. She also praised Kate for her talk and using it in her table topics too.

Our Guest, Ray, said he felt warmly welcomed and enjoyed the structure and organization of the meeting. We hope he joins us again.

Want to deliver a well-organized speech your listeners will love? – Join Toastmasters

Announcements:  Next Tuesday Toastmaster Lynne is declaring it “Wear a Hat Day.” Pease wear a hat - the funnier the better.

Our Meeting Toastmaster: As Jim unveiled Michelangelo’s, David, he announced his theme, “The Beauty of Art.”

Our President: Barb

Our Gate Team:

Grammarian and Word of the Day  Lynne shared her role and advised us to use the word, “Artistic” if we spoke during the meeting.

Ah Counter – Lynne told us her role was to count ‘ums’ and ‘ahs’ to help us avoid using them and improve our talks.

Timer –  Warren, as our timer, kept our speeches, table topics and evaluations within their limits using his green, yellow and red cards.

General Evaluator – Robert noted the meeting started on time. He complemented Giri to step in as evaluator for Lucelly even though he also gave a speech. Jim also volunteered to be Toastmaster at the last minute.

Our 1st Speaker Lucelly entitled her talk, “Antecedent Intervention on How to Change Unwanted Behavior.” Being a mom, she told us it’s important to know what motivates a child’s behavior before we intervene. She gave the pretend behavior of her daughter hating vegetables but loving dessert. Then she shared the winning formula for changing her unwanted veggie behavior. If you want the formula, contact Lucelly.

Our 2nd Speaker Giri entitled his speech, “My First Safari.” Giri’s family experienced excitement from elephants and later a lion chasing their vehicle. Although they were frightened, their driver was not. He wanted to scare Giri’s family so they would never forget their first Safari. Giri remembers it well.

Our 1st Evaluator – Giri complimented Lucelly for including her audience (us) by asking us structured questions. He also enjoyed her lively expressions while presenting her talk.

Our 2nd EvaluatorMara praised Giri for sending a link to the members with beautiful safari pictures. She enjoyed how his story progressed with both suspense and action.

Our Table Topics Master – Jean, using pictures from her boys’ childhood, pretended they were from the young lives of famous artists. Our members, as art critics, were to discuss how the pictures showed the beginnings of these art masters.

Barb noted the hand showed Salvador Dali’s strange art with wires springing from the fingers and red veins in the hands.

Robert observed Georgia O’Keeffe’s white leaves with different sizes.

Glenn thought the American Eagle with it’s head turned toward peace was quite a different style for Henri Matisse.

Lynne pointed out the cubes in the colorful geometric designs of Pablo Picasso.

General Evaluator – Robert evaluated the meeting from beginning to end.

Our Guest, Glenn, is in the process of joining.

Linda, our past president, brought us special excitement from California where she now lives. We spent extra time after the meeting catching up with her. What a treat!

Public Speaking Northwest Minutes 9.01.2020

Learn How to Become an Accomplished Confident Public Speaker – Join Toastmasters

Announcements:  Next week a leadership opportunity is available – Become our meeting’s Toastmaster. .

Our Meeting Toastmaster: Warren

Our President: Jean stepped in for Barb.

Our Gate Team was:

Grammarian and Word of the Day  Jean chose “Picturesque”

Ah Counter – Jean

Timer – Robert

General Evaluator – Kate

Our Speaker  Giri entitled his talk, ‘Making Peace with Your Shadow Self.’ Giri mentioned the famous Carl Jung who spoke of the Shadow Self behind our consciousness awareness. Giri used dieting as an example. 98% of dieters don’t achieve their goals or gain back the pounds they lost because of their Shadow Self. It tells them, “You’ve been so good. Take a break.” Then it bombards them with the sights and smells of the foods they’ve missed, for example, ice cream. Giri suggested we make peace with this Shadow Self by pausing and examining our thoughts and feelings and then reinforcing our determination to stay on track.

Thank you Giri for giving this talk on such short notice. You are truly professional.

Our Evaluator – Lynne complimented Giri on using an example, dieting, that we all can connect with. She also suggested he challenge himself by practicing during the week on Zoom. She told how she always enjoys Giri’s talks because they are personally motivating.

Our Table Topics Master – Mara invited us to speak on the spur of the moment about ‘School.’ – She asked chosen members specific questions.

Glenn spoke of a fond memory when he was in kindergarten during snack time. It was in Hawaii. He and his friend would sit in the sun with a cup of cold milk eating a very sugary butter cookie.

Jim told of being at the front board completing with other kids while adding up a long list of numbers. Jim always won because he’d add the first column in his head, then carry over the last number to the next column and add it to those numbers. He kept his speedy secret method to himself.

Jim felt like he was cheating even though he knew he wasn’t.

Robert shared his favorite extra-curricular activity. He and his college friends invited every girl from every organization on campus to their Friday night parties. He delighted in the fact so many girls came and were lined up outside the door.

Kate said she loved her kindergarten teacher who also taught her third grade class. She said he was so patient and sported a big Tom Selleck mustache. He also stopped some girls from making fun of her when her dress accidentally hiked up and revealed her underwear. He will always be her favorite teacher.

General Evaluator – Kate gave a positive review of the meeting and especially Lynne’s evaluation of Giri’s talk. She liked her positive remarks as well as her challenge for his improvement. She enjoyed Mara’s great table topic questions.

Our Members in Attendance – Lynne, Warren, Jim, Giri, Kate, Robert, and Jean

Our Guests in Attendance – Glenn and Vinod. They both intend to join our club. Woohoo!
