Public Speaking Northwest Minutes – 10/12/20

WANT TO DEVELOP YOUR SPEAKING CONFIDENCE? – JOIN TOASTMASTERS. IT’S FUN!

Sergeant-at-Arms: Lynne opened the meeting with our mission statement and flag salute.

Our President: Barb welcomed guests – Janice, Emily, and Kevin

Our Meeting Toastmaster: Kate spoke about her theme – “The Beautiful Salish Sea.” She showed us a map of its size and fiords . Throughout the meeting she shared interesting tidbits about it and its native people.

 Our Gate Team was:

Grammarian and Word of the Day  Adilene introduced the word of the day, “ENTHRALL.” Adilene kept track of the members who used enthrall. The purpose is to build our vocabulary.

Ah Counter – Janice counted the number of times members used ahs, ums, and filler words to help us avoid them and become better speakers.

Timer – Janice was also our timer and presented the green, yellow, and red cards so our speakers learn to keep within their time limits.

General Evaluator – Lynne’s job is to evaluate the meeting.

Our 1st Speaker – Glenn gave his first speech, the Ice Breaker. He entitled it, “Cultured.” He spoke with praise about growing up in Hawaii.

He experienced culture shock when coming to Oakland and shared a story about ordering some fast food at Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Glenn studied graphic design at CSC in California. He also joined Toastmasters in California.

Glenn moved to Washington State as a graphic designer. He joined our club during this pandemic to connect with people and to become an even better writer and speaker. Welcome Glenn, you are a treasured member.

Our 2nd Speaker – President, Barb’s talk, “Making Critical Decisions,” persuaded us to vote in this election because these are critical times for our country. She gave us guidelines for our voting thinking and actions:

  • Realize all issues are complex.
  • Check the facts.
  • Look at the whole picture not just one issue.
  • Explore each candidate’s decisions and data.
  • Beware of their misleading words.

We marveled at how balanced and well-delivered Barb spoke. She never gave away how she would vote.

Excellent guidelines, Barb. Your call to action – VOTE – was very convincing.

Our 1st Evaluator – Robert evaluated Glenn’s talk and offered personal information, suggestions, and ended complimenting Glenn for his calmness and eloquence.

Our 2nd Evaluator – Warren enthusiastically gave Barb compliments and praised her for tackling such a difficult topic, for her appropriate gestures on zoom, and for her story examples. He also gave her kudos for not revealing how she will vote.

Our Table Topics Master – Adilene asked Jim, “What eating contests would you like to enter.” Jim said he wouldn’t enter a hot dog contest because they look disgusting.

Jim spoke about a woman who goes around the country entering eating contests and winning. She makes big bucks and only weighs 130 lbs. In the end, Jim wants to be a watcher not an eater.

General Evaluator – Lynne evaluated the meeting from top to bottom telling us what we did well and areas where we could do even better.

She thought we handled the heavy winds, the power outages, and our efforts to keep the meeting flowing quite well.

Our Members in Attendance – Barb, Lynn, Kate, Nancy, Warren, Lynne, Glen, Lucelly, Robert, Mara, Jim, Adilene, and Jean

Our Guests in Attendance – Kevin, Janice, and Emily were our guests. We hope to see them at the next Tuesday at 12 pm since they all praised the meeting and it’s structure.

Motion to Adjourn – Jim  Second – Jean

Your Secretary,
