Public Speaking Northwest Minutes 10-20-2020

Want to learn the skills to become a polished speaker? – Join Toastmasters

Announcements:  We’ve created a promotion team to investigate Facebook Live. As a team we will be learning how Facebook Live works and then present it to our members. The goal is to promote our polished speakers.

Our President: Barb opened the meeting and welcomed our guests, Mary, Midori, and Bob.

Our Meeting Toastmaster: Lynne opened her agenda with the theme, “Falling Back.” Throughout the meeting Lynne shared Daylight Savings Time news like November 1st we will fall back 1 hour.

Our Gate Team was:

Grammarian and Word of the Day  Kate told us to use the word, “Anticipate” when we speak. The idea is to build our vocabulary. Kate said, “We did well today in using the word.”

Ah Counter – Kate counted our “ahs” and “ums” and other filler words to help us avoid them when we speak. This will help us to become better speakers.

Timer – Lynn  showed us the green, red, and yellow cards to help keep our speeches on time. This prevents us from taking too much time from other speakers and throwing the timing for our agenda off.

General Evaluator – Nancy evaluated the meeting at the end. She shared compliments and gave suggestions to make the meeting even better. This will help us, as leaders, to create well-run meetings that people enjoy.

Our 1st Speaker Warren spoke first and entitled his speech, “Light Their Fire.” He offered statistics on working from home during this pandemic. He shared the high rate of burnout feelings at Amazon and Microsoft. He also said managers could help employees handle working at home by contacting them personally with compliments on their work.

Our 2nd Speaker Jim gave his talk entitled, “A Serious Beginning.” He shared 2 stories from his childhood that influenced him to adopt a serious mindset. He is striving to add humor to his presentations by following the Humorous Pathway in Toastmasters. Jim knows using humor will makes any speaker’s talks more enjoyable for the audience. That’s what he’s aiming for.

Our 1st Evaluator – Barb felt Warren’s talk was inspiring, helpful, and interesting. She liked his suggestions for making online meetings better.

Our 2nd EvaluatorMara liked Jim’s true stories and thought that he captured the members feelings.  She would have liked knowing how old he was at the time. Jim blurted out, “6 years-old.”

Our Table Topics Master – Jean requested that each speaker finish the story sentences she provided and use “anticipate,” the word of the day within their stories.
