Public Speaking Northwest Honors the Words of Chief Seattle

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.
~ Chief Seattle, 1855

Members of Public Speaking Northwest and Toastmasters clubs everywhere are connected to each other and society. We form a web of support for each other and our clubs. The training in leadership and public speaking help Toastmasters become strong threads in other webs, as well. Clearly, Toastmasters contribute.

Jean opened today's meeting with Lynne, Jan, Eugene, Karen, Joanne, Pierce,
Jean
Elaine, Robert, Jamie, Pat, and two guests: Mara and Bernard in attendance.

Lynne

Lynne, our Toastmaster, had been busy filling roles right up to the start of the meeting. Scheduling conflicts had sidelined some members leaving gaps in our agenda. One of our strong threads, Jan, stepped into the empty Ah-Counter role just as Lynne announced her GATE team.

SPEAKERS & EVALUATORS

Pierce
Filling a hole in the schedule on short notice, Pierce spoke first with a completely extemporaneous talk. So impromptu, in fact, that he did not even choose his own topic. He asked the audience for suggestionss and then devoted his speaking time to sharing his perceptions of two diverse subjects: the recent Boston Marathon, and non-profit organizations. Pierce represents another strong thread in the Public Speaking Northwest web.

In her first evaluation, Elaine praised Pierce's ability to present an unplanned talk and look

comfortable while doing it. Giving a solid evaluation, Elaine appeared comfortable as a first-time evaluator, as well.

Jamie
Jamie, our second speaker, presented his seventh project from our CC manual: Researching a Topic. He shared with us a new way of viewing life. Instead of life having a first and second half, this new view considers lives in thirds: first third while growing up in a family, second while rasing one's own family, and the third third while blessing many families. Nicely done, Jamie!

In her evaluation, Jean applauded Jamie's research and examples. She shared a suggestion that we all can use to help in the timing of our talks. On a 4x6 card write a key
Jean
note in green for the introduction, a yellow note for the body, and a red note for the conclusion. We can then allign our talks to the light box as it changes color and signals the advance of time. Thanks, Jean!

TABLE TOPICS

Jan
With a fair amount of time remaining, Jan, as Topics Master, selected members to choose overturned slips of paper on which were written unfinished sentences. The participants: Elaine, Bernard, Mara, Eugene, Karen, and Robert then expounded in any direction they chose in order to finish the sentences and use their Table Topics time well. Yes . . . we actually had time for six participants today!

NEWEST MEMBER NEWS! Welcome, Bernard. We look forward
Bernard (center in red)

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY
Karen

Karen's mobile phone camera took some spectacular pix today. Sadly, a technology hiccup blocked them from loading on this blog. This blogger hopes to someday figure it out and bring Karen's lovely shots to light. Thanks, Karen!

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Speech-A-Thon coming May 21 ~ A Speech-a-Thon is what it sounds like – a speech marathon. On May 21 we will only be having speeches and evaluations; no table topics. There will be opportunities for at least 4 speakers, so if you are close to finishing your CC or other manual, consider signing up on the duty roster. We will also need supporting roles – speech evaluators, timer, um/ah counter, grammarian and a Toastmaster. These roles will also qualify in your CL manual so sign up on the duty roster under May 21.
Renewal dues collection continues for the membership period: April 1 - September 30. Please see your Treasurer, Joanne, with either cash or checks payable to Public Speaking Northwest. Many thanks!

Good news! One manual has been returned so far. Thank you (you know who you are). Please help all outstanding loaner CC and CL manuals find their way home. Bring them with you next week, or contact Joanne for alternate arrangements. Much gratitude!

If you'd like to join us for polishing your presentations, developing leadership skills, and making friends, we welcome you.

We meet every Tuesday from noon to 1:00 PM. You'll find us at the Seattle Times Building in Bothell, Washington ~ 19200 120th Avenue NE. Feel free to bring your lunch.
