Our Sergeant at Arms, Lynne D, opened the meeting at 12:00 p.m.

The word
of the day was “brilliant”
meaning very smart, bright, successful
Our Toastmaster was Mara, who presented information on the Summer Solstice.

General Evaluator – Jean
Speaker #1 was Kelly, with her speech, “The Faberge Protegee”, 5-7 min. She shared
a story about one of her personal experiences as a protegee. The story
illustrated the influence, impact, and importance of her mentor. She concluded with a strong suggestion to
work with our mentors.
Table Topics
Amy asked us to play the game, “Origin
Story,” describing the origins of particular objects.
Nancy: Platypus; Oak Island Canada is shaped
like the Platypus. Maybe the platypus came from Atlantis or another mythical
place.
Lynne: Origin of treadmills was a young
man named Tread Mills, who enjoyed swimming and treading water. Mr. Mills eventually developed the device
named after him.
Nitin: Origin story of bubble wrap,
invented in 1957. Invented by an
American in the 1950’s.
Kristin: Origin story of underwater hockey.
Kristin imagined people trying to play underwater polo which didn’t work, and so
they changed it to underwater hockey using a volleyball instead of a puck.
Robert: Robert explained the origins of two
types of surfing. 1) description of carpenters
smoothing out wood. 2)He also described
a board used to travel on top of water.
Maria: Maria told us the origin story of
coffee, grown in tropical areas, where creatures ate the coffee berries and
smelled wonderful. People liked the smell and decided to put coffee beans in
water.
Meera: Origin story
of leopard spots. Various creatures in a rainy environment had many different
colors of spots, caused by the rain.
Evaluator #1, Dan, said that Kelly gave a great
speech with a strong introduction and a conclusion that tied it all together.
He complimented hand movements (some of them wasted), excitement, energy and her
inviting, warm smile. He complimented her great job at pacing and suggested
more pauses.
General Evaluator, Jean, evaluated the evaluator, Dan.
She said he is an excellent listener who gave detailed positive feedback
and suggestions. Jean also evaluated the
GATE team and Table Topics, recognizing positive points and make suggestions.
The meeting
was adjourned at 1:00.
