Mentoring
discussion
Mentoring Discussion: Mentoring
in the “Pathways Era”
Mentoring in the Pathways
era is dramatically different from when everyone was “working on their
manual”. Now, all information pertaining
to speaking projects and Toastmasters in general is accessed on line. While this allows TM to provide enhanced
information such as video tutorials, it presents challenges to clubs as they
engage with new members who are excited to begin their TM journey.
Challenges
At our meeting we identified
several challenges for our club.
1. Getting new members to go into Pathways, take their assessment
and begin their path. Several new
members have given their Ice Breakers without ever going into Pathways.
2. Getting new members to engage with their mentor to better
understand the club culture/process and get help with Pathways.
3. Without the manuals, we no longer have anything “concrete” that
we can hand members to help them as they begin Toastmasters. We need something that will direct them to
what happens next.
Solutions
Suggested solutions
1. Nancy suggested we contact clubs that have been in Pathways for
a while to find out how they dealt with these challenges.
2. Update the Mentor’s Checklist.
Make it more concise and have it address Pathways.
3. Create a New Members Packet to be given to every new
member. It would consist of a checklist
how to get started in TM, such as connecting with their mentor, logging into
Pathways and taking the assessment.
There would also be support documents on getting into Pathways and how
to get in and use the club web-site.
4. Mara suggested we have a five minute “Pathways Corner” at each
meeting where a weekly tip on using Pathways is shared. This would help keep Pathways front and
center and stress the importance of members getting in and using it.
Action Items: Lynne will
draft the Mentor’s and New Member’s checklists and identify documents to
include in the packets.
Upcoming
events & holiday schedule:
Halloween Party - We have flyer from last year to use this
year. We will have one speaker and Mara will do Table Topics. Tobias was
identified and asked as someone to lead the party. He will confirm back to us.
Holiday Breaks – There will
be two Tuesdays that we will miss through the end of the year: Dec 25th
& Jan 1st.
Membership –
current membership as of October 1st is 21. Anisha was not on the
list and was in attendance at the meeting (and scheduled for next week) so we
should be at 22. (She needs to be followed up with in case she needs help with
her renewal. Nancy has been encouraging Jung to join back in.
We discussed follow up with
guests who arrive and sign in our sign-in sheet. The sheet is stored in the bin
in the room. Giri will take a picture of the sheet to have access to guests
names and contact info for follow up.
Additional
Reports submitted for October 2018 meeting are as follows:
-Warren
emailed Mara the website admin password information which I passed it on to
Nancy.
-Warren
emailed the details on how to change the roster online to Mara and I have added
November & December online.
-I
attended the virtual District 2 meeting on Sunday, September 30th
and voted on the district budget and district leadership.
Treasurer’s
Report:
-
I’m placing an order for ribbons, if any other TI supplies are needed we can
get the most out of our shipping charges. Possibly more “drawing” prizes?
-
Lynne has the most recent membership/dues paid data (emailed her a spreadsheet
yesterday for preparing her mentoring info) if any questions arise in that
regard.
