Public Speaking Northwest Officers’ Meeting 7-3-18
Present: Mara,
Randy, Giri, Hilary, Jean, Julia
Absent: Nancy,
Uliana
The meeting began with Mara prompting a 5-minute team
building exercise. She also pointed out a recent article in the TI magazine
that described a club designating a member as an official club greeter for
guests. After discussing our club’s current style in which several members
typically introduce themselves to guests with one member sitting with the
member and explaining the flow of the meeting. The officer consensus was establishing
a formal club greeter was not needed at this time.
Reports:
·
Julia, as Sergeant at Arms, asked that the
ballot baskets be moved along promptly to avoid unnecessary pressure on the
counting of ballots. She also asked for a substitute when she cannot make a
meeting and for help putting away club items at the end of the meeting as she
needs to leave immediately.
·
Jean, as VP of Education, asked that the awards
party on July 30th be announced at the meeting today and that there
be a call for an organizer for the event.
o
Jean brought up the issue of Pathways
mentoring—whether to have it, when to offer it, what format to use. It was
decided to poll the membership.
o
Jean also suggested that speeches avoid the
potentially polarizing topics of religion, politics, and sex. Officers appeared
to support Jean’s suggestion.
·
Giri, VP of Membership, did not have any
announcements.
·
Hilary, Treasurer, deferred her report until the
next meeting when she would have more complete data.
·
Nancy forwarded the following items for the
meeting:
o
Meetup: As people RSVP, I contact them to welcome them, send them to
our website and offer myself as a resource. I talked with Jung, our former
membership chair the other day. She said that she not only welcomed the RSVP
folks, she did this for anyone new who joined our Meetup group. I just started
doing this outreach as well.
o
Website: Please read the documents I revised and attached in the Member
Downloads and FAQ sections. Members should be made aware of the updated
materials, especially the speech introduction and agenda templates. The speech
intro should be a script for the toastmaster and it is often a list.
Please announce this to the membership or let me know and I will do it. (Note Mara will announce to membership at
7.2.18 meeting)
o
Website changes: Still much research to do to make tabs and pages
rather than downloadable docs.
Additional Items:
·
Induction of new officers is delayed until later
in the month.
·
At the club meeting today, it will be announced
that in the fall there will be Humorous Speech and Table Topics contests at the
Division level, but not at the District level. To participate in those
contests, club contestants must be selected by the end of August.
·
Jean said she would be presenting on Goal
Setting at the end of August.
·
On the issue of the preferred method of
communication, email was discussed, but no firm decision was made.
·
Goal setting for the club, individual members,
and officers was brought up but not explored in depth.
Minutes submitted by Jim Tracy, stand-in secretary for
Uliana.
