Public Speaking Northwest Teaches the Words of Indira Gandhi!

Public Speaking Northwest teaches members how to lead while enjoying  warm friendships.

Barb

Barb, our president, welcomed Pierce, Abe, Ana, Joanne, Jan, Ken, Kathy, Jamie, Kyle, Lynne, Joanne, and Jean. 

Pierce

Pierce, our Toastmaster for the day, used "Persistence" as his theme for the day followed by inspirational thoughts on the word. Pierce is a toastmaster "Pro" and led the meeting well.

Joanne

Joanne, as Grammarian, chose "Tenacious" as the word that everyone had to use when they spoke today.

Kyle

Kyle, our First Speaker, spoke about "Persistence in the Game of Disc Golf." His 3 points included:
1. Face the Foe - the golf course and become its friend.
2. Focus on the task at hand. Tell yourself, "I can do this."
3. Realize where you are is where you are. Continually conquer each step and move forward. He ended with a quote, "Talent gets you to the top. Character (persistence) keeps you there."

Jan

Jan evaluated Kyle's talk with praise for his use of space, eye contact, organization, and good analogies.

Joanne

Our second speaker was missing. Pierce asked for a volunteer. Joanne agreed to give her Ice Breaker and it was terrific. We saw of glimpse of her tenacious spirit as she described her first and last ski trip. She fell off the T bar heading up the slopes, tripped and fell off the chair as she was supposed to land. She had to roll over to avoid being trampled on by the skiers from the following chair. She fell several times on the icy hill, landed upside down, and need the ski patrol to bring her down the rest of the way. With frozen hands and frozen eye lashes she survived. 

Ken

Ken evaluated Joanne and praised her for taking up the challenge to give her first talk, her gestures, storytelling abilities, and her courageous spirit in taking this opportunity to speak.

Kathy

Kathy, as Table Topics Master, asked Lynne, Ken, Abe, and Jamie seasonal questions about Macy's Parade, football, home decorations, and waiting in the cold for Best Buy's Black Friday store to open its doors.

Abe

 Abe won table topics. He demonstrated waiting to crash the doors of Best Buy for his new ipad.

Lynne

 
Lynne, as Sergeant-at-Arms counted the votes for the Blue Ribbon winners.

Ana

 Ana, our humorist told a super joke about the difference between the words "complete" and "finished."

Public Speaking Northwest Supports the Words of John Maxwell

Public Speaking Northwest agrees with John Maxwell, "All leadership is influence." Today we had a fine Ice Breaker talk and an excellent presentation on leadership.

President, Barb

President Barb welcomed Ken, Tracy, Jerry, Kathy, Pierce, Sam, Jan, Kyle, Jamie, and Jean. 

Our word for the day, in honor of Thanksgiving, was 'Bounteous.' Most everyone used it when they spoke.

Timer, Jamie

Jamie, our Timer, kept us moving forward.

Ah Counter, Kyle

Kyle, our Ah Counter, kept good track of our 'filler' words. Members had to pay a nickel apiece for each um, and, ah, or stutter.

Speaker, Sam

Our first speaker, Sam, entitled his talk, "Imagine Everyone in Their Underwear." Sam spoke of overcoming his fear of public speaking and making mistakes. His well-organized speech reflected most of our fears when we first joined toastmasters. Sam is on the road to becoming a gifted speaker with his humor, eye contact, gestures, and use of groups of three.

Evaluator, Jean

Jean evaluated Sam's presentation with praise for the considerable skills he already has and gave some advice for being even more effective.

Speaker, Ken

Our second speaker, Ken, gave us a talk on leadership. He encouraged us to do what we came to toastmaster to do, become speakers and leaders. We learned two lessons on the importance of thinking outside the box. One included a blue circle on a white piece of paper and the other lesson featured a box, 4 dots, and two lines. WOW!

Our members gave Ken a round robin evaluation and shared our goals for joining toastmasters.

Jerry, our fireman, presented a joke in story form. It involved a fire truck, a dog, and 3 small children. His punch line was priceless.

Public Speaking Northwest Honors the Words of Eleanor Roosevelt

Public Speaking Northwest knows members join Toastmasters because of their dreams. Eleanor Roosevelt  said "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."  

Members hope to grow in their skills and confidence while on their road to becoming speakers and leaders. They have dreams and Toastmaster members lead the way.

Our President, Barb, opened the meeting with Lynne, Jerry, Barbara, Kathy, Yanhong, Ken, Abe, Kyle, Jamie, Jan, John, Jean, and guest Barbara, in attendance. 

Abe, our newest member, gave the invocation: "Pain introduces us to who we are." ~ John McDonald.

 



Lynne, our toastmaster, featured Daylight Saving Time as her theme. She shared many interesting factoids from history on how it came to be. Lynne ran the meeting flawlessly.

Jan S. kept the speakers, evaluators, and table topics on time. Here she is explaining how the timing lights work.

Barbara, our grammarian, chose "Extort" as our word for the day. Many members cleverly used it when they had occasion to talk.

Kyle, our first speaker, chose the title, "Disc Golf, Intro to Flight." He demonstrated different throwing techniques and some characteristics, including the putter, mid-range, and distance driver. He diagrammed some of the flight patterns too. It was fascinating.

Barb, his evaluator, praised his gestures, eye contact, props, and call to action. 

John, our second speaker, entitled his talk, "Confessions of a Serial Entrepreneur." This was his Ice Breaker, his first speech. John took us on a history tour starting at age 8. Through the years John has been an entrepreneur at heart. He learned what to do to make money at an early age. Presently, he is a consultant and helps new businesses thrive.

Jamie, John's evaluator, found lots to like. John used good eye-contact, gestures, told anecdotes, had a fine opening, body, and conclusion. 

Ken

Ken, as Table Topics Master, gave some whacky questions about pilgrims, turkeys, and food. Joanne, Jerry, and Abe gave funny, fascinating, answers.

Jean, as general evaluator, praised her evaluators for using the "Sandwich Cookie Method." They praised the speakers, then gave some suggestions for improvement, and ended with more praise.
